One person has already had a severe allergic reaction to the Frito-Lay product.

The Food and Drug Administration has launched a nationwide recall on Stacy's Pita Chips after someone reported having a severe allergic reaction to an undeclared allergen. Federal law requires labels to disclose ingredients that are common allergens—in this case, Stacy's accidentally packaged flavored pita chips in packaging that is used for "plain" pita chips. The allergen in question is milk, according to the FDA.

The parent company behind the Stacy's brand, Frito-Lay, notified the federal safety agency "after it was discovered that 228 bags of Stacy’s Simply Naked Pita Chips were inadvertently filled with another flavor of pita chips, potentially exposing consumers to undeclared milk,” according to a company statement.

The recalled pita chips in question are Stacy's Simply Naked Pita Chips, which are packaged in 7.33-ounce bags. Each mislabeled bag contains the UPC number "028400564632" found on the rear side of the bag, near the bottom right. The chips have a "best by" date of April 23, 2019, and have a manufacturing code of "65M127902" near the expiration date.

According to the FDA's website, more than 160 foods can cause severe allergic reactions, but 90 percent of all allergic reactions to food stem from eight foods: Milk, eggs, shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.

The company says those who have a serious sensitivity or allergy to dairy should immediately discard the product and bring it back to a point of purchase for a refund. If you have any questions, consumers can reach Frito-Lay at 800-352-4477.

Stacy’s Simply Naked Pita Chips recalled

Frito-Lay is voluntarily recalling a specific size bag of Stacy’s Simply Naked Pita Chips because they may contain an undeclared milk allergen, according to a Department of Defense All Food and Drug Activity message sent Feb. 4. Those with milk allergies run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product.

Frito-Lay recalls pita chips after flavor mix-up, reported allergic reaction

Frito-Lay is recalling some pita chips after a consumer reported having an allergic reaction to undeclared milk ingredients.

The company initiated the recall after it was discovered that 228 bags of Stacy's Simply Naked Pita Chips were inadvertently filled with another flavor of pita chips, potentially exposing consumers to undeclared milk, Frito-Lay officials said in a statement.

The affected products are 7 1/3 oz. bags of Stacy’s Simply Naked Pita Chips that were distributed nationwide. The bags have both a “Use By” date of 23 APR 2019 and a nine-character manufacturing code of “65M127902” listed below the “Use By” date. These numbers can be found on the front of the bag along the top right side.

Frito-Lay officials said the recalled bags will also have a UPC code of "028400564632" listed on the bottom right side of the back of the bag.

People with milk allergies could suffer a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat the affected chips, the statement said. At least one consumer has reported having an allergic reaction to the chips.

Frito-Lay officials said it's notified the Food and Drug Administration of the issue.

This precautionary recall notification is being issued due to an isolated instance in which a package pulled by the Florida Department of Agriculture on 11/2/2020 from a retail store in Florida indicated the potential presence of Cyclospora. Affected Shenandoah Growers customers have been notified of the recall and instructed to immediately remove and discard recalled products from all store shelves, distribution and other inventories to ensure they are no longer available for sale or consumption. These products were harvested and packed nearly 4 weeks ago and should no longer be in commerce. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite. A person may become infected after ingesting contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, body aches and fatigue. The infection is treated with antibiotics and most people respond quickly to treatment. No other Shenandoah Growers products are subject to recall, and the company has no knowledge of any illness reported or related to this product. Consumers who may have a recalled basil product should discard it immediately and not eat it. Consumers with questions, or to obtain refunds, may contact the Shenandoah Growers Consumer Response Center at 844-896-6939 Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm Eastern time.
