30 Healthy Smoothy Recipes That Can Help Your Weight Loss Journey

By choosing specific ingredients that help aid digestion, burn fat, decrease inflammation, smoothies can be a great part of a healthy diet.

When you&rsquore in need of a quick source of nutrients that is also delicious, smoothies are a great solution. Loaded with essential vitamins and minerals, the blend of fruits, veggies, and protein-rich milk or yogurt can be a healthy breakfast or energizing snack. And as easy as it is to pick up a six-pack at the grocery store or a custom one at your nearest juice shop, it&rsquos even easier (and, let&rsquos be honest) cheaper to whip up a healthy smoothie recipe right at home. Heck, you can even make a big batch on Monday to last you through the week.

To help make the smoothies more filling, you should swap out some of the unnecessary sweeteners for sources of fiber and protein. Additionaly, as Dr. Alka Gupta, co-director of the Integrative Health & Wellbeing Program at New York-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine told INSIDER, &ldquobe careful about how often you're having them, the amount that you're having, the sugar content of what you're adding, and added sugars/ingredients.&rdquo

Ready to get blending? Any one of these homemade smoothies, made of superfoods like spinach and kale, and sweet ingredients like strawberries, mango, and pineapple, will sustain you for a few hours, and have you ready to conquer whatever the day has in store for you.

Joy Bauer, R.D.N and nutrition expert for Woman's Day, can't get enough of this smoothie. "I'm not sure which I love most: the delicious flavor, the super load of antioxidants, or the stunning color." The recipe makes two, so enjoy both yourself or share one with a loved one.

Ingredients: 1/2 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup plain low-fat yogurt, 1 tsp honey, 1 cup mixed frozen berries, 1 cup freshly cooked beets, 3 to 5 ice cubes.

The best part about this green drink? "[It] hides two cups of über-healthy leafy greens behind crisp tart apple, creamy banana, and sweet pineapple." So basically, it's a tropical drink with nutrients.

Ingredients: 1 cup almond milk, 1 cup baby spinach leaves, 1 cup kale leaves, 1-1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks, 1/2 ripe banana, 1 Granny Smith apple.

According to Bauer, this fall-flavored drink has "beta-carotene, calcium, fiber, magnesium, and potassium."

Ingredients: 1/2 cup nonfat vanilla yogurt, 1/2 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 1-1/2 tsp maple syrup, 1 ripe banana, 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, 3 to 5 ice cubes.

This bright bowl will bring a little color to your morning, and a lot of nutrients to your day. This smoothie includes beets, which are rich in nutrients and have been known to keep blood pressure in check, according to Healthline.

This sweet smoothie has two secret ingredients &mdash carrots and cucumbers &mdash to give your bowl extra nutrients and extra veggies,

Summer squash, which is packed with vitamin C, helps give this peach-based smoothie is gorgeous hue.

To give your morning an extra kick, try this ginger-filled smoothie. According to Heathline, ginger can suppress your appetite, help stimulate digestion, and decreases inflammation, all of which can aide in weight loss.

The chia seeds in this smoothie are full of fiber, which will keep you fuller longer. Mangos are also a great fruit that is low in carbs and fat, according to NOTV Food. That said, a little mango goes a long way, so stick to the serving size to avoid having too much sugar in your drink.

Cinnamon is a little sweet, a little spicy, and surprisingly nutritious. According to Medical News Today, cinnamon acts as an anti-inflammatory and aids digestion to help your body process food better.

In addition to reaping the aforementioned benefits of cinnamon, the banana in this tasty drink can help reduce bloating and control your appetite, according to Medical News Today.

The benefits of spinach are endless. According to Woman's Health, the leafy green can boost immunity, strengthen bones, protect your heart, and more. Blended together with some fruit, you get a sweet smoothie that is chock full of nutrients.

Though high in sugar, berries are low in fat and calories, making them a great ingredient for smoothies. Studies have also shown that eating berries earlier in the day can prevent you from overindulging in the hours after.

By combining bananas and berries, you have the perfect smoothie that beats bloating, reduces inflammation, helps fill you up, and most importantly tastes good.

Green tea can help burn fat and improve exercise performance, according to Heathline. Not only that, but that natural caffeine in green tea will give you energy, but won't have you crashing later in the day.

Health benefits of Turmeric Pick-Me-Up

Turmeric, for starters. It's a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Even more important, it contains curcumin, the yellow-orange pigment in turmeric that has been found to benefit those who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's, and rheumatoid arthritis.

It's even suspected to offer protection from certain cancers and may help to lower cholesterol.

Ginger is a natural aid to digestion with anti-inflammatory properties. Coconut water provides an incredible source of electrolytes like potassium and sodium, lemon gives us Vitamin C, and honey is rich in minerals.

How to make this blackberry cocktail for a crowd:

This is an easy cocktail to make in a big batch if you need to serve a crowd!

  • Make the blackberry syrup a day or two ahead of time. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.
  • Juice your lemons in the morning before your guests arrive and store the juice in a mason jar in the fridge (you can use bottled lemon juice if you prefer, but it will taste much brighter with fresh lemon juice!)
  • Just before your guests arrive, combine the blackberry syrup, lemon juice, and bourbon in a large drink pitcher. Use a large whisk or immersion blender to whisk the mixture for a few seconds to incorporate the ingredients. Add a few sprigs of rosemary to the pitcher and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.
  • When you’re ready to serve, pour the drink mixture into individual glasses filled with ice, top each serving with a bit of tonic water, and you’re good to go! This whiskey lemonade will last in the fridge for 3-4 hours before it starts to lose flavor.

Ingredients and Equipment (per 9 inch deep dish pie)

  • 3 to 4 cups of Blueberries - fresh or frozen (without syrup) (3 cups if you like a thin pie, 4 cups if you like it a little higher!)
  • 7 Tablespoons corn starch (for those of you in the British Isles, you know it as "corn flour"). You may also use an equivalent amount of flaked tapioca instead - the tapioca balls don't dissolve well.
  • 3 Tablespoons water (or grape juice)
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
  • One 9 inch pie crust (see this page for the world's easiest flour pie crust recipe and directions!) OR.. if you are like me, you'll DEFINITELY prefer a graham cracker pie crust (again, in England, this would be made from "Digestive" biscuits!) - if you haven't tried the graham cracker crust - I highly recommend it.
  • Spices:
    1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • One 9 inch deep-dish Pie Plate - (grocery stores sell both disposable pie pans and glass pans. Get the deep type!
    • Sweetener:
      • 2/3 cup granulated (ordinary table) Sugar
        OR
      • 1/3 cup sugar and 1/3 cup Stevia (in a prepared form like Truvia, it measures same as sugar if you use another form, you'll need do your own conversion) - or Splenda, if you prefer, (Stevia (in a prepared form like Truvia, it measures same as sugar if you use another form, you'll need do your own conversion) - or Splenda, if you prefer, works in pie recipes, but not by itself. The pie turns out heavy and with much less flavor).

And now, choose the topping you prefer:

      • Crumb topping (my preference, again):
        • 1/4 cup sugar (OR 1/8 cup sugar and 1/8 cup Stevia (in a prepared form like Truvia, it measures same as sugar if you use another form, you'll need do your own conversion) - or Splenda, if you prefer, )
        • 1/2 cup flour
        • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
        • Dough topping:
See the pie crust recipe and double it to make extra to roll out as a topping to cover the pie.

Step 1 - Make the pie crust

Never made a crust, either? Fear not, they are really simple. Click here for instructions about making a flour pie crust. It will open in a new window, so just close the new window to return here. I prefer blueberry pie in a graham cracker crust click on the link for directions. .Now is also a good time to get the oven preheating to 375 F.

        Step 2- Wash the blueberries

Just rinse them in a colander or sieve in cold water, no soap.

Pick out and remove any bits of stems, leaves and soft or mushy berries. It is easiest to do this in a large bowl of water and gently run your hands through the berries as they float. With your fingers slightly apart, you will easily feel any soft or mushy berries get caught in your fingers.

Step 3 - Mix the dry filling ingredients.

Combine the 2/3 cup sugar (or sugar/Stevia (in a prepared form like Truvia, it measures same as sugar if you use another form, you'll need do your own conversion) - or Splenda, if you prefer, blend), 7 Tablespoons of corn starch in a bowl and mix well! Some people like 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and/or 1/4 teaspoon of allspice, mixed in, also. That's optional, but it is nice!

Step 4 - Mix in the liquids

Add the 2 Tablespoons of lemon juice, and 3 Tablespoons of water (or grape juice) and stir it up. If you use Stevia (in a prepared form like Truvia, it measures same as sugar if you use another form, you'll need do your own conversion) - or Splenda, if you prefer, , it will be pretty gloppy, rather than drier crumbs, but it still works the same!

Step 5 - Add the blueberries to the pie crust

Add the blueberries to the pie crust. Just pour them in! There's lots of air space and it will cook down, so don't worry if they mound up about an inch (2.5 cm) above the edge of the plate.

Step 6 - Pour the liquid mix into the pie

Just pour the mixture of sugar, juice, etc. into the pie all over the blueberries. If it is a gloppy liquid, don't worry, just pour it somewhat evenly over the top. But it doesn't take perfection it will smooth itself out in the oven.

Step 7 - Make and add your topping

If you want the crumb topping, just mix

        - 1/4 cup sugar (OR 1/8 cup sugar and 1/8 cup Stevia (in a prepared form like Truvia, it measures same as sugar if you use another form, you'll need do your own conversion) - or Splenda, if you prefer, )

        - 1/4 cup cold butter or margarine.

Do not melt the butter, just dice it into the sugar and flour as you mix them together. in a small bowl and sprinkle it over the pie. The dough dicer/blender, shown above in the box, is ideal for making a perfect crumb topping. A fork or potato masher is your next best bet.

If you want to the dough topping instead, roll out a circular section of dough that you made in step 1, to 1/8 inch thick, then place it over the pie. Seal it against the edges with the pie crust, and make decorative slits with a knife.

Step 8 - Put the pie in the oven!

Cook the pie at 375 F (or 190 Celsius) for 1 hour.

Step 9 - Remove when the pie is golden and pie is bubbling

Check to see if it is bubbling and crust is golden brown. If if not, check every 3 or 4 minutes until it is.

        Step 10 - Enjoy!

Set the pie on a rack to cool and enjoy! Here is a slice of the finished pie! Serve warm with ice cream. Refrigerate after it is cooled. It easily lasts a week in the fridge (that is, if there is no one there to eat it. Most of the time, people eat it all within a day!)

        • If you use frozen berries, it helps to sprinkle 3 tablespoons of corn starch in pie crust/pan just before you add the blueberries! That helps to suck up any additional liquid, so the pie won't be runny.
        • Making a Blueberry pie for Passover:
Comments from a visitor on March 24, 2012: "I'm going to bake it for this year's big Passover feast on April 6 (2012). Because of Passover's restrictions against using wheat and corn, I can't use either flour or cornstarch or graham crackers.
I'll use potato starch instead of corn starch, and will use Passover matzoh cake meal (very, very, finely ground matzoh) instead of flour.
For the crust, I'm going to try using Passover macaroons. Maybe coconut macaroons smashed up and then mixed with coconut oil instead of butter. (Passover has no restriction against using butter, but I've been substituting coconut oil instead of butter in all my daily cooking year round, just for nutritional health reasons.) I'm thinking it will be delicious. Here's hoping. -Carolyn"

        Equipment

        • Jar funnel ($2 at Target, other big box stores, and often grocery stores and available online - see this page) or order it as part of the kit with the jar grabber.
        • Jar grabber (to pick up the hot jars)- Big box stores and grocery stores sometimes carry them and it is available online - see this page. It's a tremendously useful to put jars in the canner and take the hot jars out (without scalding yourself!). The kit sold below has everything you need, and at a pretty good price:

        Optional stuff:

        • Foley Food Mill ($25) - not necessary useful if you want to remove seeds (from blackberries) or make applesauce.
        • Lid lifter (has a magnet to pick the lids out of the boiling water where you sanitize them. ($2 at big box stores or it comes in the kit at left)

        Reviews

Though I live in Miami, I never tried Haitian food until yesterday, Tony's in Miramar $8.99 all u can eat. The locals in the restaurant enjoyed how much I liked the Pikliz. At the end of a very filling meal, I bought a container of Pikliz to go and added it to the leftover pork loin I cooked earlier in the week. Some Haitians will tell you it goes with everything, but imo, more than once a day is overkill. Still, a very nice and different spicy condiment which I will add to my eggs and other meals on occasion. Thank you for the recipe.

It's very pretty and reminded me of giardiniera, especially since I substituted jalapeños for the Scotch bonnet peppers. It's best thought of as a spicy cole slaw, a side for something that comes wrapped in a bun to absorb the flagrant hot-and-sour bite. I'll wait for aging before deciding whether to make again.

Pikliz is the evil, bastard child of sauerkraut & cole slaw. This is very good version of the Haitian condiment.
