Bringing kids to a restaurant is a daunting task. Navigating the menu is a chore if they’re picky eaters, they get bored waiting for the food to arrive, and glares from fellow diners can be expected if they start acting up. But while lots of restaurants offer a perfunctory children’s menu, some chains go above and beyond in their efforts to appeal to the whole family.

For chain restaurants, the days of the boring old chain menu with the same five to 10 items (usually with names like “Mickey Mouse” or “Ninja Turtles” attached) are long gone. These days, kids' menus feature everything from mini pretzel roll cheeseburgers to wood-grilled fish and steak medallions. Lots of chains are also really good at keeping kids occupied by giving them a coloring and activity book or even arranging an occasional mascot appearance.

In order to rank the most family-friendly chains, we looked at all the major chains and judged them on the following criteria: They needed to be casual, the noise level needed to be moderate, the atmosphere and décor needed to be fun and inviting, and most importantly, the kids' menu needed to be awesome, with both healthy and unique options. We only considered sit-down restaurants; fast food joints are kid-friendly by definition.

There’s something about chain restaurants that always seems to be a bit more “fun” than non-chains — they’re just better at catering to children, which makes it a no-brainer to keep chains in mind when you’re going out to dinner with the entire family. These are the chains that are the most family-friendly.

IHOP goes above and beyond to make sure that kids are happy, usually paying them extra-special attention. The kids' menu here is legendary; who doesn’t have great memories of being served their classic “Funny Face” pancake as a kid? Other kids’ menu options include Jr. Chicken & Waffles, a banana crêpe with Nutella, and Kraft macaroni and cheese. Each kids menu item contains fewer than 600 calories.

Quite possibly the silliest-named chain restaurant in existence, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s bills itself as a “family-friendly sports bar,” and they succeed at that concept. Parents can watch the game while kids choose between pretzel roll cheeseburgers, chicken tacos, chicken salad, quesadillas, or other classics, each of which comes with a wide selection of side dishes. It’s a fun atmosphere where kids and adults alike will feel right at home.

The 10 most-loved fries at chain restaurants

Fries are more than burgers’ sidekick. During the pandemic, they were one of the comfort foods consumers craved and ordered the most, according to data from GrubHub.

To find out just how much Americans love their fries, Restaurant Business’ sister company, Technomic, polled consumers to name their favorites. A similar survey was conducted by Technomic’s Consumer Brand Metrics team back in 2017. Many of the same chains rose to the top in 2021, perhaps an indication that french fry fans are very loyal. But there were a couple of surprising omissions.

To find out where consumers go when they have a hankering for fries—and the reasons for their choice—read on. The chains are ranked from tenth to first in order of the percentage of recent customers who said the fries are craveable and unique.

10. Chick-fil-A

Although fans rave about Chick-fil-A’s waffle fries, the chain came in last in the Top 10, with 18.9% of consumers singling it out. But several mention those “yummy waffle fries” as being “so good,” while others praise the accompanying dipping sauces and the fact that the potatoes taste homemade. In 2017, Chick-fil-A came in sixth, and is still the only chicken chain to make the ranking.

9. Fuddrucker’s

Burger chain Fuddracker’s was the pick of 19.9% of respondents. Fry fans like the thicker wedge cut of these potatoes and the assortment of cheesy toppings. Those surveyed note several toppings that are particularly “craveable” and “delicious”—the chile cheese, nacho cheese and hot cheese. Fuddrucker’s moved up a notch from 2017, when it ranked tenth.

8. Shake Shack

Shake Shack didn’t even make the Top 10 list in 2017, but this year, it landed in eighth place. The fast-casual burger chain was the choice of 22.5% of consumers, many of whom cited the “crinkle cut” of the fries and the special cheese sauce. One respondent said “these french fries are the best I’ve ever had,” while another appreciated that they “were good and not greasy.”

7. Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburger

Just edging out Shake Shack was Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburger, earning spot No. 7 with 22.6% of consumers. The sauce and seasoning are what makes these potatoes stand out, according to some comments. One respondent noted “their fries and fry sauce are what I crave and can only be satisfied here.” Customers often opt to dip the “skinny, crunchy fries” in the sauce instead of ketchup—a differentiator for many. One consumer went further to say “their french fries are so good, they’re almost addicting.” Freddy’s didn’t even make the cut in 2017.

6. Red Robin

Variety is what sets Red Robin’s fries apart in the opinion of 24.8% of consumers. Guests can get the chain’s distinctive thick-cut steak fries, either naked or with seasonings such as garlic-Parmesan and other flavors, as well as sweet potato fries. These choices, along with Red Robin’s signature “bottomless fries”—an all-you-can-eat feature with each order of a gourmet burger—earned the casual-dining chain sixth place. Red Robin moved up from its ninth-place ranking In 2017.

5. Smashburger

Smashburger came in fifth, with 25.7% of respondents giving the chain’s fries high marks. Especially craveable are the burger concept’s signature smash fries, flavored with rosemary, garlic and oil—an item consumers can’t get anywhere else. The sweet potato fries are also a differentiator with those surveyed. Smashburger earned the No. 4 spot in 2017, so it pretty much maintained its status among fry fans.

4. Charley’s Philly Steaks

An even 26% of consumers craved the loaded fries at Charley’s Philly Steaks. These are almost a meal in themselves the potatoes are topped with cheese, bacon and ranch dressing. “They have the best loaded fries of any fast food place I know,” said one respondent, with another claiming “the cheese and bacon fries are a flavor combination that I crave regularly.” Back in 2017, Charley’s was in fifth place, and this year, the chain was still neck-in-neck with Smashburger—the two just swapped spots in the ranking.

3. In-and-Out Burger

In-and-Out retained its No. 3 ranking from 2017, chosen as having craveable fries by 35% of consumers. Respondents pointed to the QSR’s fresh—never frozen— hand-cut french fries as a deciding factor, with a number finding the animal-style fries the most craveworthy. These potatoes come with chopped peppers and onions and a special sauce, leading one consumer to say “the animal-style fries are delicious and original.”

2. Five Guys

The same three chains that earned the top three spots in 2017 kept their titles this year—in the same order. Five Guys had a clear lead at No. 2, with 47.4% of respondents craving their twice-cooked fries. Each location makes the fries fresh to order, and large bags of Idaho potatoes are visible in the dining area to underscore this point. One customer said “sometimes I go there just for the fries they have a very unique flavor.” Another exclaimed “Their fries are some of the best!”

1. Checkers/Rally’s

Checkers/Rally’s fries still top the list as favorites, with 51% of consumers calling these potatoes the most craveable. The “famous seasoning” makes them the winner for most respondents, with descriptions such as “awesome,” “one-of-a-kind” and “best around.” The chain uses a signature secret seasoning to make the fries craveable, but for those wanting even more flavor, they can be ordered topped with cheese, chili, ranch dressing and/or bacon.

Notably missing from this ranking is McDonald’s, which came in seventh in 2017. And Arby's curly fries, No. 9 previously, were also left off the list.

The basics: No Cheddar's around? With more than 1,200 U.S. locations, there's bound to be a Chili's nearby to get that baby-back-ribs jingle stuck in your head for eternity. And while ubiquitous eateries like Applebee's aim for the same mass appeal, Chili's and its Southwest-inspired menu edge out the competition with healthier choices, better all-around value, and a renewed focus on what it does best — namely, perennial favorites like ribs and fajitas.

For the kids: Cheesy chicken pasta and grilled chicken sliders are notable kids' menu items, but there are also standbys like pizza, grilled cheese, and quesadillas. Chili's has a wider-than-usual range of kids' sides, including healthier choices like pineapple and celery, Mexican rice, and corn on the cob. A kid-size molten chocolate cake makes a casual dinner out feel more special. Expect to pay $5.20 to $5.50, dessert excluded.

For special diets: Healthier choices are easy to find on the five-item Guiltless Grill menu, including chile-rubbed salmon with rice and broccoli (630 calories) and mango-chile chicken with the same sides (490 calories). A detailed allergen menu offers a lot of guidance for anyone avoiding gluten, nuts, or other ingredients. It also lists vegan and vegetarian-friendly options like a Caribbean salad, bean and veggie fajitas, and a veggie burger.

What you'll pay (and how to save): The famous baby back ribs are the priciest choice on the Chili's menu — a full rack will set you back about $20. Many sandwiches and more modest entrees range from $10 to $15, and fajitas from $14 to $17. Budget-savvy diners can eat on the cheap with a Dinner for Two menu: Select one of five appetizers and two entrees from about a dozen choices for $22. Another strategy: Go midday for a $7 lunch combo menu that includes sliders, flatbreads, and a chipotle chicken bowl.

Silky aubergine and sweet-tart tomatoes are combined with ginger, spring onion, sesame seeds, soy sauce and Shaoxing rice wine, and served alongside slices of Silken tofu. Ottolenghi recommends saving any leftover caponata and trying it in a cheese toastie in place of pickles. It's the dish that keeps on giving.

Top 10 Secret Recipes

The weekend is upon us, and what better way is there to enjoy it than to cook or bake some of your favorite takeout treats? Think of how much money you will save by whipping up these lovely recipes instead of paying out all the big bucks to the fast-food chains. So, here it is: the top 10 secret recipes!

1/4 cup Miracle Whip
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons french salad dressing
1/2 tablespoon sweet relish
2 teaspooons dill pickle relish
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon dried, minced onion
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon ketchup
1/8 teaspoon salt

1 regular sized sesame seed bun
1 regular sized plain bun
2 beef patties (2 ounces each flattened to bun size)
2 tablespoons Big Mac sauce
2 teaspoons reconstituted onions
1 slice real American cheese
2 hamburger pickle slices
1/4 cup shredded lettuce

To make the sauce, mix together all the ingredients about one hour before using.

Discard the crown half of the regular bun, retaining the heel. Toast both sides of the heel and the &ldquoinner&rdquo sides of the sesame bun. Cook the two-all-beef-patties just like regular burgers. After the bun parts are toasted, put 1 tablespoon of sauce on each of the heels (toasted side). Then add 1/8 cup shredded lettuce to each. On the true bottom bun, place one thin slice of American cheese on top of the lettuce. On the extra &ldquoheel&rdquo, the middle bun, place two pickle slices on top of the lettuce. When the meat patties are done, place them one at a time on both prepared buns. Stack the middle bun on top of the bottom bun, and put the crown on top.

1. Cabbage and carrots must be finely diced.
2. Pour cabbage and carrot mixture into large bowl and stir in minced onions.
3. Using regular blade on food processor process remaining ingredients until smooth.
4. Pour over vegetable mixture and mix thoroughly.
5. Cover bowl and refrigerate several hours or overnight before serving.

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Cut chicken into 8 pieces(4 legs and 4 thighs).
3. In a zip lock bag mix all dry ingredients.
4. Moisten chicken.
5. Put one or two pieces of chicken at a time into the bag and shake well.
6. Then put chicken pieces on an oiled pan. Use Canola or Peanut oil so your chicken will not stick.
7. Bake approximately 40-50 minutes until chicken is done. Half way through baking spoon oil from pan on chicken to brown properly.

So much for the secrets herbs and spices!

1. Mix 2,400 grams of sugar with just enough water to dissolve (high-fructose corn syrup may be substituted for half the sugar).
2. Add 37 grams of caramel, 3.1 grams of caffeine, and 11 grams of phosphoric acid.
3. Extract the cocaine from 1.1 grams of coca leaf (Truxillo growth of coca preferred) with toluol dry the cocaine extract.
4. Soak the coca leaves and kola nuts (both finely powdered 0.37 gram of kola nuts) in 22 grams of 20 percent alcohol.
5. California white wine fortified to 20 percent strength was used as the soaking solution circa 1909, but Coca-Cola may have switched to a simple water/alcohol mixture.
6. After soaking, discard the coca and kola and add the liquid to the syrup.
7. Add 30 grams of lime juice (a former ingredient, evidently, that Coca-Cola now denies) or a substitute such as a water solution of citric acid and sodium citrate at lime-juice strength.
8. Mix together 0.88 gram of lemon oil, 0.47 gram of orange oil, 0.20 gram of cassia (Chinese cinnamon) oil. 0.07 gram of nutmeg oil, and, if desired, traces of coriander, lavender, and neroli oils, and add to 4.9 grams of 95 percent alcohol.
9. Shake.
10. Add 2.7 grams of water to the alcohol/oil mixture and let stand for twenty-four hours at about 60 °F (15.5 °C). A cloudy layer will separate.
11. Take off the clear part of the liquid only and add the syrup.
12. Add 19 grams of glycerine (from vegetable source, not hog fat, so the drink can be sold to Jews and Muslims who observe their respective religion&rsquos dietary restrictions) and 1.5 grams of vanilla extract.
13. Add water (treated with chlorine) to make 1 gallon of syrup.

This recipe is from Food Flavorings: Composition, Manufacture and Use (2nd Ed.) 1968 by Joseph Merory (AVI Publishing Company, Inc., Westport, CT). Makes one U.S. gallon (3.8 L) of syrup. Yield (used to flavor carbonated water at 1 fl oz per bottle): 128 bottles, 6.5 fl oz (192 ml).

6. On the empty side, spread about one tablespoon of sauce.
7. Fold over, and press gently with spatula.
8. Cook until cheese is melted and slice each into 4 pieces.

1. Measure oatmeal and blend in a blender to a fine powder.
2. Cream the butter and both sugars.
3. Add eggs and vanilla.
4. Mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder and soda.

6. Roll into balls and place 2-inches apart on a cookie sheet.
7. Bake for 10 minutes at 375° or until golden.

3. Press mixture evenly into a 9 x 13 inch pan.
4. Melt chocolate chips in microwave or in double boiler.
5. Spread over peanut butter mixture.
6. Chill until just set and cut into bars (these are very hard to cut if the chocolate gets &ldquorock hard&rdquo.

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Lightly oil a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and spices in a large bowl. Using a pastry knife, fork, or food processor, cut butter into the dry ingredients until mixture is crumbly and no chunks of butter are obvious. Set aside.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together pumpkin, half and half, and egg. Fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Form the dough into a ball.
4. Pat out dough onto a lightly floured surface and form it into a 1-inch thick rectangle (about 9 inches long and 3 inches wide). Use a large knife or a pizza cutter to slice the dough twice through the width, making three equal portions. Cut those three slices diagonally so that you have 6 triangular slices of dough. Place on prepared baking sheet.
5. Bake for 14&ndash16 minutes. Scones should begin to turn light brown. Place on wire rack to cool.

To make the plain glaze:

1. Mix the powdered sugar and 2 tbsp milk together until smooth.
2. When scones are cool, use a brush to paint plain glaze over the top of each scone.

To make the spiced icing

1. Combine the ingredient for the spiced icing together. Drizzle this thicker icing over each scone and allow the icing to dry before serving (at least 1 hour). A squirt bottle works great for this, or you can drizzle with a whisk.
